Chris Cornell on David Cook

April 4th, 2008 | by superhush |

There’s been some criticism thrown toward David Cook after his performance of Billy Jean the other week. Not because the performance was bad, if anything it was fantastic, but because it was essentially a cover of a cover. Ryan Seacrest acknowledged this when he announced Cook as doing Chris Cornell’s version of Billy Jean, but the judges didn’t. And that sparked all kinds of conversations online (and offline).

But what did Chris Cornell have to say? Here’s an excerpt from Entertainment Weekly:

“It appears the judges had no idea that it was my arrangement and were giving David Cook praise about how brilliant he was in performing the song that way. My fans are very protective and felt David should have volunteered the info [at that point]. Even though he did cover it well, and it was brave of him to try and pull it off,” Chris Cornell told Entertainment Weekly. “It was clear to me [that] he was a big fan as he followed my arrangement down to the T, including the most subtle vocal nuances. I think he did a great job at pulling it off.”

Hopefully this will end the controversy surrounding this song. And who knows…maybe come the finals we’ll see Chris Cornell on that Idol stage singing the tune with Cook. Maybe?
